Almost unanimously, the specialists agree that heraldry appeared in the XIIth century in the Western Europe and it is indisputable related to the evolution of the military equipment and armor.
At the tournaments, where the cavaliers fought for glory, honour, or even the grace of a Lady, used to exist a special man having a specific task: to present the insignia of the participants. His name was
“heraut des armes”. From this “heraut” we have the name of the today heraldry.
The oldest Romanian preserved coat of arms is in fact the seal put by Mircea cel Batran on the treaty with Poland, in 1390. The symbols present then are still present in the nowadays Romanian coat of
arms: the eagle, the cross, the sun and the moon.
